Originally from the south of Ireland (Mount Leinster), Saint Columban left his abbey in Bangor in the north of the country at the age of 50 after 25 years of monastic life to live as a hermit at the foot of the Vosges mountains in Luxeuil in eastern France, where he founded a monastery.
After 20 years in Luxeuil, he was banished by Queen Brunehaut who sent him back to Ireland. He then began a new journey that took him across Europe in all directions to Bobbio in northern Italy, where he died in 615.
If you wish to retrace the journey of Saint Columban, or just a few stages of the Via Columbani over 8200 km from Bangor to Bobbio, find all the necessary information on viacolumbani.com or on the app: Via Columbani.
