Written in 1718 for the private theatre of the Duke of Chandos, Acis and Galatea tells the story of the love between the shepherd Acis and the nymph Galatea, and the wrath of the Cyclops Polyphemus, who is also in love with Galatea. Despite its modest means, this short masque or opera in English, with its exquisite rendering of the pastoral world and its flow of inspired melodies and characterisations, is one of Handel's most successful stage works. And, unsurprisingly, it remained the most popular of his works throughout the eighteenth century.
It's magical!
