Fantasio, a young man in search of meaning who is dragging along his mal de vivre and decadent idleness, is pursued by creditors. When the king's fool dies, he takes advantage of the opportunity to put on the fool's costume and camouflage himself in the palace. The Prince of Mantua arrives in the city of the Doges with his valet to meet his future wife, the king's daughter. An improbable costume exchange and Fantasio's disillusioned advice form a Venetian imbroglio brightened up by live pop-rock interludes.
